Why I Speak about Sexual Harassment and Abuse in the Workplace

***

I believe that speaking publicly about sexual harassment is the single best thing I can do to raise awareness and prevent sexual harassment (and other forms of sexual violence) in the future. I speak about what sexual harassment looks like, the physical and psychological effects of sexual harassment, and what victims, leaders, and bystanders can do to put an end to this widespread form of oppression.

I suffered in silence while enduring sexual abuse in my workplace for several years. I suffered in silence as my mental, physical and emotional health declined because of the sexual harassment I experienced daily. Until my health started to rapidly decline, I silently accepted sexual harassment as a part of my job - something I needed to endure if I wanted to continue on my chosen career path and experience the financial security I needed and desired.

After 7 years of experiencing sexual harassment and abuse in the finance industry, I finally found the courage to use my voice and speak up. While employed by financial companies, I have spoken out twice about the sexual harassment I experienced at work. The first time it made me a target for even more vulgar harassment and humiliation, and the second time I experienced retaliation.

Now that I am outside of the industry, I’m a free agent, willing and able to advocate for those who do not have a voice. I speak on behalf of the women who are still enduring harassment daily so that they can earn a living to support themselves and their families. I speak on behalf of those who feel ashamed and powerless because of the way their managers and coworkers speak to them. I speak on behalf of those who are suffering (perhaps unknowingly) from the damaging mental, emotional, and physical effects of sexual harassment. I speak on behalf of the targets of harassment who feel alone, who wonder how so many colleagues can be within earshot of the harassment and stand by in silence, listening as their friends are singled out, bullied, abused, and oppressed.
